Does Sendmail do calendaring, contacts, public folders, resource
allocation / check out, etc?  Or is it just a SMTP engine?

Umm... sendmail?  Exchange, Domino, and CG Pro combined probably don't 
touch as many email messages as sendmail does.  I don't know what
current 
numbers are, but I think I remember reading somewhere that over 80% of
all 
email passes through sendmail at some point.
