We wrote a little program to use CHKTAP to read the volume id of the first tape, compare it to an expected value, then use that in the INZTAP command. Runs at 4pm to let us know several things: 1 - Is the right tape in the tape drive or is someone using that drive for a restore and forgot to put the right tape back in before going home? 2 - Is there any tape at all in the drive? 3 - Did the tape drive fail from last night and need to be varied off/on? 4 - Is the tape drive varied off because it's being used on another partition unexpectedly? 5 - Is the write protect set on the first cartridge? Sucess, or failure, results in email to operations. Granted, in a multi volume set, configured as sequential instead of random, you won't be able to check the next volumes. Rob Berendt
