Another blatant vendor input - along the lines of Vern !!

Original Software have developed Extractor which will automatically create a 
data model of your DB2/400 database and then extract
the data required - additionally the data can be sampled, or updated or 
archived.

Probably a little more than was required by your client - but maybe they 
weren't aware of the possibilities.
