My experience dates from many years ago (about 1998), perhaps on V3R2. So it 
seems to have improved.

Just executing a simple SELECT did not work that way.

SQL/400 (interactive) and Query/400 would not put data in a DDS based file. 
QMQRY and CPYFRMOPNF would.
