Need to communication PGM to PGM between iSeries and VSE

Thanks for the reply.  I'll look into the RJE concept.   Wow, that's
old.  You guys are probably as old as me.

I was hoping there was some sort of more modern messaging function
found in each operating system through which I could send a command, in
each systems "native tongue" to start a particular job or command.   
Then, hopefully, I could use that same messaging capability to return
the "return code" or "job completion status" of each sides job so the
other side would know how to proceed.
