Option 1 is guaranteed if your manager says you need to be at work on Friday...
Yet they don't count the fact that you likely used Saturday to get there and at the very least Sunday. You may have spent significant time at Expo with various vendors, possibly attended a Sunday workshop and then began the conference in earnest with Ask the Experts. Reminder: at this point you haven't yet gotten past SUNDAY. Those who won't trade Sunday for Friday are being VERY short sighted. And speaking as one who helps schedule the conference, we work our fingers to the bone to assure that the Thursday grid is full wall to wall AND full with the same quality of sessions and speakers as Monday through Wednesday. The closing event is merely a very welcome finishing touch on the week of education.

What is more likely:1 - West coast conference. People blow off the whole Thursday in order to catch a Thursday morning flight. 2 - West coast conference. People realize they can't catch a Thursday afternoon flight so they fly out on Friday morning instead.
