Jen,

The original events were scheduled like this:
- Professional Development Roundup - 5:00pm-5:30pm
- Professional Development Sessions - 5:30pm-6:30pm
There were 4 PD sessions - remember the set of 4 trading cards? If you collected all 4, you could go to the roundup and pick up a ticket for your choice of the 4 PD sessions. If you did not have a set, you could get a random ticket to a PD session. This was a concept to foster some level of community for the conference attendees. It was working to that point.

Other than a meeting of Canadian attendees (no idea why that time was chosen) there were no other educational events scheduled for that time in support of the PD night. There may have been BOFS scheduled, but they were not until after the PD sessions - you still would have been able to make those. Also, CUDS was going to be a major event starting at 7:00pm with Domino 7 being announced and celebrated.

When it was discovered that the hospitality suite rented from COMMON was going to be used for a $90,000 Porsche "raffle" at 6:00pm, there was a request to change the "raffle" to a later time. However, that ended up working like this:
- Professional Development Roundup - cancelled
- Professional Development Sessions - 5:15pm-6:15pm
- "Raffle" - 6:15pm
I was told the new times were because the vendor would not move their drawing any more than 15 minutes.

In the end, it was apparent the vendor did not support the PD night, and did not communicate to their captive audience that the PD sessions were still an option. That event.. er, that scam, drew a large audience and meant that the PD night was reduced to the non-drinkers, most of the smart attendees who knew they would not win, a few deluded individuals who thought they could do both, and the attendees ignorant of the scam event itself.

I do understand the draw of a $90,000 Porsche over COMMONs best PD speakers, but it was ironic, and very very sad, that they missed out on the best evening at COMMON for a scam. I have faith that COMMON will never repeat this.

Trevor

Subject: Re: COMMON Update... - the Porsche give-away?

I was slightly irritated that:

A) The drawing DID NOT start promptly at 6pm...a
Porsche commercial did.

and

B) The car was NOT given away.

Had the drawing been promptly at 6, there still would
have been PLENTY of time for me to hit the 1 of the 2
sessions I had wanted to as they both started at 630.
