Hey, somebody remembers me! Thanks for that, Vern. That was Tengiz in
Kazakhstan, in the oil field next to the Caspian Sea. It was definitely an
unusual job, working 28 days on and 28 days off in a fairly hostile
environment. When I was first there we had no web access, just e-mail, with
IBM software support in the UK and hardware support in Moscow, but with a
week's lead time if we needed a CE. We also had the only AS/400s in the
country for a while. Midrange-l was an absolute lifeline. Sand used to be a
problem with a fine dusting of it constantly getting into the units. My
operator, a local, also killed two scorpions in the computer room one
morning right next to the spot where I had been lying on the floor while
fiddling with a modem.

I have occasionally been on the list from since returning home, which is
