Thanks for the many suggestions of things to check.

I work swing shift ... lots of things to run when mass of day workers off
the system, so for me to see this happen is often when system load at its
lowest.

I did the End Month this past weekend, and Saturday afternoon when I
determined that everyone was off the system, so that I could load a bunch
of stuff to JOBQ, I had one of these fall-asleep incidents.

I was talking with an IT co-worker Monday afternoon about this problem when

it happened to both of us ... we were on stuff like SEU WRKSPLF WRKSYSSTS
and WRKSBSJOB, then we talking about that when in walks a co-worker whose
production job had gone down, but the Perle was normal so it could not be
the communication line. I speculated that this was close to the time that
many people at the main factory end their work day, and that the drain on
interactive as at its highest when many tasks opening closing access to
files with programs.

As you can see from http://wiki.midrange.com/index.php/SYSCMDUSNO I already

know about the INTERACTIVE TAX ...

We had CPI1479 at 8/30 10.37.47
This was the first hit in many weeks.
I not remember seeing it since before the move of HQ to different address,
and in the process the AS/400 went to the main factory, with HQ becoming
the remote site.

Our DSPSYSVAL QPRCFEAT = 2291

Since we first started getting hit by the Interactive Tax, and management
unwilling to upgrade, I been re-writing some software to use JOBQ more
heavily than INTERACTIVE. When we get hit by the interactive tax, it is
usually around shift change when most of the work force signing on, or
signing off. It is extremely rare for me to see more than one hit a day.

Like I said, we have several problems, like an apparent flakey
communication line ... same ma bell provider, same type of connections, but

we moved HQ offices so some of the wire is different ... a phone line, that

would go months with no problem at the old address, is now having downage
weekly, recently on Sundays, so it is a good job I get the remote backup
Saturday nite.

Incidentally, one reason I not been active recently on wiki.midrange is the

need to put my non-400 security interests some place else, which got me to
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Computer_Security_Audits

WRKSYSACT apparently needs security officer access, then tells security
officer that the Grace period has expired on the Performance Tools license
management program. Human management here not want to invest $ in anything

we not already have, so I rely on what comes native (bundled free) with
OS4.

>We are on AS/400 model 170 OS/400 V5R1 mixed mode, with more people
>connected via PCs than via twinax.

It is used for BPCS 405 CD.

I tweaked the system values of DSPJOBTBL to use a bit more disk space to
manage spool files, since it seems to me the volume of reports sitting on
spool are on the rise. Right now disk space is at 62% ... 6 months or so
ago it was at 70% and I had been working on locating ancient records we no
longer need.
