When our production backups started taking too long, we went from an everything-but-OS/400 every night to the following: SAVSECDTA, SAVLIB (production data libraries), SAVCHGOBJ UPDHST(*NO) (everything else), SAV (IFS). We still do a GO SAVE/21 weekly. Thus, a recovery is as simple as restoring the latest SAVE/21 tape followed by the latest daily tape. The restore of the 21 tape is shortened as we don't restore the prod data libs from there. Now, there are ways to optimize this further, but this is working fine for us right now. SAVCHGOBJ UPDHST(*NO) is essentially a differential. Data archiving is a different subject. We do what we can to limit it, but entropy always wins.
