Eric,

you're not alone, unfortunately.

This is one of the reasons we in DC do a seminar series in which we bring an out of town speaker to DC to present solid relevant subject matter. We actually do this in Richmond and Philly also as part of our seminar series. Details at http://www.wash-midrange.org/seminars/ Also, you may want to checkout if indeed you do have a local user group (www.eserverusergroup.org) as many, like us in DC, have annual technical conferences that are 1-2 days in length. And you'll find our JAM info at
http://www.wash-midrange.org/cgi/jam.pl

These aren't intentional shameless plugs for WAM. Folks that can't make it to a major conference need to know that there are still, in many cases, resources available to them.

Toronto, Orange County(CA), New England, Chicago, and many more user groups have these mini conferences and in many cases just for this reason.

so the cost could be considerable. I would certainly like to see what it's
all about, but I can't easily justify the personal expenses involved.

I suppose I fit in the "young" category (at age 37), but with 20 years in
midrange, my memory tells me that 1) I've never worked in a shop that was
affiliated with COMMON, 2) I've never worked in a shop that supported the
notion of sending anyone to COMMON, 3) most shops refuse to allow their
programmers to get involved in LUG, 4) only one shop has paid for
specialized education. Its a lousy track record, and in my opinion, it's
only getting worse. Bummer...

In lieu of COMMON, I've come to see these mailing lists as my educational
salvation.

Eric,

I encourage you to attend any of the YiP events at COMMON in Orlando. You
may be surprised at how many "young programmers" are there!

Yeah, what a shame that the young programmers are never (in my experience)
the ones that get to go to COMMON.....
