Re: Performance Issues on 570

Al, interesting to hear your story. We suffered a similar case. In 
September 2004 we migrated from a 830 with V5R2 to a 570 with V5R3 and 2 
Processors.  We are using external HD's from EMC. We expected an increase 
in performance but our batch processing runs at nearly the same time. We 
tried to change several performance parameters including pool 
reconfigurations with nearly no success. Even the experts from Rochester 
didn't find out what's going wrong.

In March we tried to figure out what changes in hardware could give us a 
boost. We went to the IBM Labor in Montpellier (France) and tested our 
batch scenario on two machines. One 570 with internal 56 x 35 GB HD, the 
other with external ESS800 (LS Mirror 35 GB and 188 x 8,5 GB Balanced), 
both with 2 Processors and 32 GB memory. 

The result from this test was that the internal system was much faster 
than the external. Even the internal was faster than our 570. But due to 
security  reasons we didn't want to change that. But EMC helped us to 
change the HD's to those with 15,000 rpm. That finally gave the expected 
results. Now the batch processing runs less than half the the time as 
before.
