That is basically the answer IBM gave. But the fact remains that v5r2 was officially supported on the model 400. It was however the last release supported on the model 400. Don't understand IBM's thinking, but I know I didn't appreciate an upgrade to the last supported release to so negatively affect the performance of the box without warning. Luckily for us, as I said in the original post, the 400 was one its way out. But what if it hadn't been?
