Awhile back, someone on the list suggested that I check my homegrown ftp application for this same vulnerability. They were right - it has it. One suggestion was to actually change to the directory requested. Retrieve the current directory, and make sure that it's ok. The current directory would not be quite so canonized. I'm also thinking about checking for ..'s in the directory and handle that accordingly. But a blanket "do not allow" might cheese off some people, myself included.
