I see your point.

I came from a S/36. Great box, but there was a lot that was "included" in
the AS/400, that wasn't in the base S/36. Such as Display Station Pass
Thru, DDM, etc. All of this you paid extra for on the S/36 (and I believe
on the S/38 also). It's sad to see much of this being yanked out of the
box and replaced with "fee" packages. Packaging allows you to make a
decision on using the right tool for the job and not have to limit
yourself because of a management decision to "either / or" because they
would only pay for one of the solutions.

Subject
Death of SNA?

Rob,

You hit exactly on what I was thinking. The beauty of the AS/400 and a
major
cause of it's popularity in the past has been the fact that

You buy a box,
You buy a deveolopment tool,
You buy/write software and it does everything.

I think they plan on keeping SNA, but making it a big Mainframe style add
on. Back in the '80s they were working to give us all the power they
had in mainframes, included in the box. Now they are coming full circle,
and
if they continue this nonsense I think it will be the demise of our box.
