I was told the printer is connected by a network connection, which makes me wonder why a 5250 printer session was used. The person who set the printer up isn't available to ask. The device type is 3812 and the DEVCLS is *VRT. I'm not very familiar with printers as they relate to the AS/400, but I have to imagine that if the printer can be attached with a network connection a client access printer session should be needed. Is it possible to assign an IP address to the device? -----Original Message----- From: midrange-l-bounces@xxxxxxxxxxxx [mailto:midrange-l-bounces@xxxxxxxxxxxx] On Behalf Of Wilt, Charles Sent: Thursday, May 05, 2005 12:42 PM To: Midrange Systems Technical Discussion Subject: RE: VPN and Client Access Printer Sessions I don't believe what you want is possible. AFAIK, Client Access doesn't support *IPDS printers at all. Printers attached to PCs are by definition ASCII printers. You'll not using the *IPDS chip inside the printer at all. The reason *AFPDS printing works is that Host Print Transform (HPT) can convert *AFPDS to ASCII to print to an ASCII printer. Take a look at the DEVD on the iSeries. If you don't have TYPE(*IPDS), then the iSeries doesn't see the printer as *IPDS. What type of printer are we talking about? How is it connected to the PC? It would seem to me that you should be able to connect the printer directly to the network and skip going through client access at all.
