While the HFS APIs could be appropriate, I'm not sure why they'd be "required". 
I haven't worked with 3995s for some eight years, so I've forgotten a lot. Why 
can't the files just be CPY'd to a directory off of /root at worst? Shouldn't 
the file system handle this for you?
