ok,  I hear you.  So,  I can alter the file DDS with SQL, and then RPG, DDS,
WRKQRY will recognize the new trait? 

Is there a downside that I need to be prepared for?

DDS is the Dead Data Specification. Get used to using SQL. You can
always ALTER TABLE a DDS table if you need to use DDS as a baseline.
