Actually,

PDF tends to be smaller than a word document.

The only time I've seen large PDFs was when the PDF was graphical or the PDF 
doesn't have compression turned on.

Look at IBM's manuals.  RPG reference is 810 pages, in 3.28MB.

One advantage to the graphical PDF is that it's a lot harder to modify.
