every version of PGP or GNU I've found doesn't run on the iSeries, which
is not surprising. It needs to run under AIX, or some flavor of Unix
or Linux or Windoz.

I need to do the same thing and considered using the Qshell of OS/400
to run some version of PGP or GNU but don't know if it will work. If I
have to, I'll configure an LPAR to use AIX or Linux to run my PGP or
GNU.

The AIX version should run on your iSeries. An AIX version of PGP (Command Line) can be copied to the IFS and called from applications running under OS/400 and i5/OS.

The following instructions can be used to install PGP to your IFS from a Windows desktop.

1. Download the pre-built AIX binary from here: http://www.pgpi.org/products/pgp/versions/freeware/unix/6.5.8/. This will save a compressed tar file called PGPcmdln_6.5.8.AIX_FW.tar.gz on your PC.

2. To work with compressed tar files under Windows, you can download and install the latest version of 7-zip (freeware) from here: http://www.7-zip.org/

3. From Windows Explorer, invoke the 7-Zip file manager to perform a series of conversions/extractions on the compressed tar file (the series of intermediate extracted file names below look very similar, but there are subtle differences):

 PGPcmdln_6.5.8.AIX_FW.tar.gz
   (-extract->)  PGPcmdln_6.5.8.AIX_FW.tar
 PGPcmdln_6.5.8.AIX_FW.tar
   (-extract->)  PGPcmdln_6.5.8_AIX_FW.tar.gz
 PGPcmdln_6.5.8_AIX_FW.tar.gz
   (-extract->)  PGPcmdln_6.5.8_AIX_FW.tar
 PGPcmdln_6.5.8_AIX_FW.tar
   (-extract->) pgp-6.5.8/pgp <-- this is the PGP binary

4. Transfer the AIX binary (pgp) to your IFS using FTP (in BINary mode)

5. From a command entry screen, use QSH or Qshell to invoked the AIX binary. E.g.:

    > QSH CMD('/.../pgp -h')
