INSTEAD OF triggers A new SQL trigger in DB2 UDB for iSeries is referred to as an INSTEAD OF trigger. INSTEAD OF triggers can be defined only on a view and are processed instead of the INSERT, UPDATE, or DELETE statement against the view. In general, only specific kinds of views can be deleted, updated, or inserted. Using an INSTEAD OF trigger, the requested operation against the view gets replaced by the trigger logic, extending the update capability of the view. The logic in the INSTEAD OF trigger can be as straightforward as knowing which underlying tables need to be updated when an UPDATE is done against the view. Or it can contain complex business logic that can hide the complexity of the schema and do additional authorization checking or encryption of data before executing the logic against the underlying tables.
