Need way to retrieve data from an external database

Hello,
We are currently involved in a project that requires the iSeries to
retrieve data from a table existing on another server (not an iseries).
I tried to set up a relational database entry and use SQL connect but
the other system doesn't have the DRDA standard.  I'm really not sure
how to go about getting the data.  We need to access this real time,
from an interactive order entry screen on the iseries.  The external
database will be  used to hold customer information and if the customer
is placed in a "hold" status in our ERP system which resides on the
iseries.
