The client is using T-Mobile phones right now. They had Nextel, but Nextel wanted $70 a pop for the cable to attach to the Palm Pilot. This is a construction company, and the PDA's tend to be abused (one was run over by a bulldozer). I doubt they want to spring for something that's fragile. Provisioned to SprintPCS, unlimited data via cel is $15/month. Not bad since you can also use the data side for email & other stuff. I'm sure the browser can be locked down if you don't want them surfing the net. I use the Mochasoft 5250 emulator ( http://www.mochasoft.dk/tn5250palm.htm ) on mine. I also have a VPN client, terminal services client, Word/Excel/Powerpoint editor, and Acrobat PDF viewer. And it's my USB/Bluetooth flash drive. Away from work, I use it for MP3s & games. In theory, they can be upgraded to support Push-to-Talk a la Nextel but Sprint hasn't rolled that feature out yet. You can also get PDAnet which lets you use the unit as a cellular modem for a PC. Hunt me down at COMMON if you want to take a look. John A. Jones, CISSP Americas Information Security Officer Jones Lang LaSalle, Inc. It uses Palm Pilots for data collection, and then the user transmits the data to/from the iSeries using his cell phone as a modem. Works flawlessly. Some of those old Palm Pilots are wearing out, and we have been unable to get new Palm Pilots to run the application properly. The application was built using Satellite Forms. The communications piece was custom built. The client is now wondering if there might be a more modern and more easily supportable method out there. One requirement is that they do not want to incur monthly wireless charges if they can use the cell phones as a modem, nor do they want the foremen who carry these devices to surf the net. Any and all suggestions are invited.
