It's been a couple of years since I have worked with barcode printers. The
Intermec 3400's used to be primarily serial although I seem to recall there
was a parallel option. If you have DIP switches with speed options (19.2K,
9600, 4800, etc.) it's in all likelihood serial and you will need a null
modem cable. Check the back of the printer and read the manual. Some
don't support all pins and some do. I have seen buffer overruns because in
large batches the cable couldn't tell the PC to stop sending data. I would
also recommend ethernet as previously mentioned. If you don't have
internal there are external options. Marknet ethernet boxes by Lexmark had
both serial and parallel ports. If it's parallel-only then I can also
recommend JetDirect by HP. There are other options.

I'm trying to attach an Intermec 3400 label printer through my PC. I'm
not really sure what I need to do. I imagine I have to set something up
in Client Access and then create an outq that points to the printer that
I setup in client access. So far all I have done is create an OUTQ. By
that I mean I did the following CRTOUTQ OUTQ(TESTLBLQ). I will need to
change the RMTSYS information once I know what that is. Can anyone tell
me if I'm heading in the right direction, or if I'm completely off
track? I'm using a null modem cable right now, but do I need to use a
parallel cable?
