The HMC is a closed system. You cannot and should not add any applications or hardware to it. Given the duties of the box it would be unwise to do so even if you could. Once modified, IBM would have an ever increasing difficulty level attempting to support it.

When we install operations console machines on pre i5 hardware we make the same request of the customer. Sometimes they do not listen and then they pay us to come out and rebuild the thing for them.

You are correct that the hardware is there but only because it is way cheaper to use off the shelf hardware with extra bits than to have custom built hardware with the bits omitted.
