I know what you mean Steve, but I think I would phrase it differently. I think these programmers have plenty of business knowledge. What they don't have, and what (I think) they don't necessarily need, is specific vertical industry knowledge. This isn't necessarily true for employees, but it can be for contractors. I've worked in a bunch of different industries, from flowers to furniture, and I don't know those industries. I do know business..I understand inventory and payables and all. I also think permanent employees need to understand the business completely. Contractors need to know business. Of course, the more they understand about the vertical the better they are.
