Would anyone know if *NOMAX for members is really *NOMAX or is there truly
some limit to the number of members that a file could have.

From the HELP screen for the CHGPF command on my V5R2 system:


  *NOMAX
    No maximum is specified for the number of members; the
    system maximum of 32,767 members per file is used.
