My thought is that you may want to to put an entry for "myservername.mydomainname.com.au" in the HOSTS or LMHOSTS file on your PC. On mine it is the LMHOSTS file and the entry looks like this: 192.168.1.1 myservername.mydomainname.com.au #PRE Can you do a successful CWBPING from a DOS window using both the short name and the fully qualified name? example: C:\>CWBPING myservername.mydomainname.com.au If both CWBPING's are successful check your host table (CFGTCP option 10 and verify that you have both the short name AND the fully qualified name there. It should look similar to this: 192.168.1.1 myservername myservername.mydomainname.com.au Also check CFGTCP option 12 for the correct Host and Domain names. (IIRC a missing domain name here can cause this problem.) Host name . . . . . . . . . . . 'MYSERVERNAME' Domain name . . . . . . . . . . 'MYDOMAINNAME.COM.AU' Hope this helps, Scott Ingvaldson iSeries System Administrator GuideOne Insurance Group -----Original Message----- date: Thu, 20 Jan 2005 22:43:45 +0800 from: <mbailey@xxxxxxxxxxxx> subject: Novice AS400 <snip> But when I click on Management Central, it tries to connect but then gives the following error. We were at the IBM data center getting a demo of the S/34 when Mr. D asked the salesman about the effects of a power failure on the computer. The rep said that it would not be a problem. Mr. D said OK, and pulled the plug from the wall. You should have seen the look on the rep's face! The SE (remember them?) fired up the machine and restarted the MAPICS demo with the AXZPX0 command, and bailed out the sales rep. Mr. D took out his checkbook and paid for the system on the spot. I am a complete novice when in comes to this machine and this is the first time I had ever actually laid a hand on one. Very exciting learning curve. I have poured over Red Books and the net and slowly making headway. I suppose I should do a course but the cost would be way out of my league. Anyway, I have come up against a problem and I am now at a loss. The machine is a 170 / 2290 running V5R1. After a lot of experimentation, reading, purchase of book (from the USA as I could not find on here in Perth) etc I am stumped. I am trying to get the Operations Navigator working. I have worked through numerous problems wit respect to TCP/IP, hosts just to be able to ping into and out of the machine. Finally got all that working. I initially was running QCTL and although I could ping in and out I could not get a screen displayed when using Personal Communications AS/400 Client Access Express for Windows. Also, I could not get a screen displayed when telneting into the machine. I was suggest that I should try QBase instead of QCTL.. This solved the problem to a point. I can now happily telnet into the machine and actually get a screen to work with. I can use the client terminal Personal Communications AS/400 Client Access Express for Windows and get a screen to work with and that all seems fine. However, there is still a problem with the Operations Navigator. If I Verify Connection. on the My Connections server name everything verifies ok. But when I click on Management Central, it tries to connect but then gives the following error. "Unable to complete the connection to central system "myservername.mydomainname.com.au" I have MGTC started I have the host file on the Win machine ok and host in the AS400 configured. Otherwise they will fight over using port 25 on any and all IP addresses on the system. If you only have one IP then one of the two will be effectively blocked. And it can be a toss up as to which although probably first started wins. Also, it depends on what version of Domino. Before V6, if I remember correctly, you could use MSF where Domino used the iSeries SMTP stack. But with the newer versions Domino uses its own SMTP and IBM didn't provide a way to have OS/400 use it instead of the internal one. Depending on the IP addresses you have on the system and your network you may not have to touch your router/firewall if everything is outbound only. The router function just has to accept the iSeries' address and pass the packets out to the internet. I did forget in my example that when the second address was added to the system that it also required a second address on the firewall/router that was in the new sub-net and the system had to have a *DFTROUTE (sp?) point to it. If you can use an address within the current sub-net the firewall/router change and the second *DFTROUTE aren't needed. I chose a new sub-net because I found PCs (without a local DNS, WINS, or any MS server) would connect randomly to any address the iSeries had within the PC's sub-net. NetBIOS seems to broadcast on all addresses. While this might be an advantage when you have more than one adapter in the iSeries, it can be a problem too. I have a system with 1Gb and 100Mb adapters and use only network switches. If I connect both adapters to try and have redundancy protection, some of the PCs connect to the 100Mb adapter which can affect throughput where it wouldn't if everything used the 1Gb when it is available.
