Somehow, years ago we were lucky on the generator - it was very nice with
the multiple day outage we had here as a result of the ice storm.
One problem we have though is that we still have a number single points of
failure in our environment. I've been nagging at our facilities people to
get a generator for the building. I think it would cost about $80,000 to
purchase but the rental is about $6,000 a day so it's been hard to get them
to move on it. Although I think we just spent about 24 hours of building
shutdown and about $48,000+ in rental charges. If we could get one for the
building we could set it up so that our generator would only be activated
if the primary generator failed.
One question I have is anyone doing any redundant power backup? Dual or
triple UPS's, or anything with generators?

It's examples like this that took us years to justify a power generator.
The UPS wasn't nearly so hard.

In 1979, I had just moved to SFO to go to work for a company whose founder
was an electrical engineer (you all might recognize the double D logo on
your tape decks, movie trailers, etc.). We were at the IBM data center
getting a demo of the S/34 when Mr. D asked the salesman about the effects
of a power failure on the computer. The rep said that it would not be a
problem. Mr. D said OK, and pulled the plug from the wall. You should have
seen the look on the rep's face! The SE (remember them?) fired up the
machine and restarted the MAPICS demo with the AXZPX0 command, and bailed
out the sales rep. Mr. D took out his checkbook and paid for the system on
the spot.

I didn't do it on a S/38, but I did it once on a S/34 on the switch on
the side, while at a customer site no less. :(
