You'd think you could use concurrent maintenance and do a remove/add.  Then
just delete the hardware resource that will show up as the optical drive
with a ? In the "work w/ non-reporting" screen.

Not sure if it would work or not - worth a shot rather than IPLing.

Ok, well digging through the infocenter was easier than expected.

Looks like my answers are:

1) yes, box must be shutdown
2) yes, DVD-RAM must replace DVD-ROM
