Required means that the LPAR will not start using that profile unless that
particular piece of hardware is available for use.

Desired means that the LPAR **WILL** start via that profile if the hardware
is allocated, you just won't have that particular card/bus/frame available
to the LPAR.

If you want the bus right away, use dynamic LPAR to add the item. Then the
next time you need to IPL, power down fully and do a restart from the edited
profile to pick up your new preference.

Subject: lpar, hmc and a new bus

While I enjoy the friday version of music on hold with IBM (40+ minutes so
far), I thought I'd bounce this one.

Have a bus on our 570 that was not allocated to any partition. Used the HMC
to 'Add Required' instead of 'Add desired' to the partition profile.
When will it be available to the partition? Next IPL only? Will removing
it from the profile and adding it as 'Add desired' make it immediate? We do
have an IPL scheduled for tomorrow.

Just added a 2gb ixs card to the bus and a lan card for the ixs. IBM guy
did that right before lunch. Just happened to be here doing PC maintenance.
