The project I'm on is doing some offshore development (my client's edict, not
mine).

The client is incredibly fussy and slow with regards to setting up VPN access
to their AS/400's, and they're not going to get the configuration sorted out
before the end of January. Since they want my team to start work before then,
I'm exploring the possibility of purchasing a separate AS/400 Model 170 or 270
and letting my offshore team use that. Because I'm thick when it comes to IBM
hardware (or hardware in general), I'm hoping that some of the Midrangers could
offer a little advice with regard to configuration.

The team will be developing a set of batch server programs that are executed
through a Java front end. The programs are OPM RPG, generated by Synon. The
server progams are called either through a trigger firing or through stored
procedures.

(I can't change this setup. If I could, I would.)

I know I will need:
5722SS1 - Operating System/400 (V5R1M0)
5722WDS - WebSphere Development ToolSet
5722ST1 - DB2 Query Mgr and SQL DevKit
5722JC1 - Toolbox for Java
5722JV1 - Developer Kit for Java
5722JV1 - Java Developer Kit 1.2

I know I will not need:
5722XE1 - Client Access/400 Express for Windows (the client uses Mocha, and
printer support is non-existent)

I'm sure I will need other LPP's, but I'm not sure what. Would I need any of
the following:
5769AS1 - IBM WebSphere Application Server
5722TC1 - TCP/IP Connectivity Utilities
5722CM1 - Communications Utilities

Rough estimates right now show that I'd need somewhere between 180-200gb disk.
(I'm basing my estimates on the development machine the client currently uses
onshore, which has many more users, and a lot of program definitions.)

I don't know how much memory I would need. More is, of course, better, but
what would I need for adequate, if pokey, performance?

I know I will need a licence for Synon.

Thanks
