Thanks Rich, I appreciate the pointers.

Indeed it was a firewall issue.  The Windows 2000 box had the TCP/IP printer
service running, occupying the port, as far as I could tell.  I stopped that
service and zam! it went right through.  ISA apparently gives you little
indication that the port is in use locally and the logs show little, if
anything.

I suggest basic network tools first.  Can you traceroute from new jersey to
utah?  

Check firewall logs, per the docs of your firewall.

Packet sniff.  Get a copy of ethereal running on a win or linux box, and
watch the packets fly in.

Can you lpr from your home box?  On linux you can lpr a file to the i5 via
"lpr -p destination foo.txt".
