30+ hours seems excessive.  Perhaps you are using a very small machine?

Are the records really large? The transaction file on the systems I work
with are normally in the 8-15 million range, and I never worry that any
kind of update might take 30+ hours.  

Can we see the code for bigfreakinupdate, and the layouts for the PF's?

Also, what do the joblogs for these jobs look like?
