RE: Field Type 'P' in a query

Understood.  Just keep in mind that WRKQRY was intended from the get-go to
be an end-user tool.  Yes, it has some capabilities that the tech staff can
use, but when dealing with an input file that is not externally described to
the system, and that is to say that each "field" in the record is not
explicitly defined in the system, then query is really not the most suitable
tool for that task.

One other thing and then I'll sign off on this topic.  *If* the record is
fixed-length format, where the fields in all records line up in columns, you
may want to define a new physical file (PF) using DDS so that the layout
matches the columns in the original file, then use CPYF with FMTOPT(*NOCHK)
to copy the original to the new file.  Once you get the data into an
externally described file, life becomes much easier.
