I have found embedded sql inside rpg to be great for this kind of searching. You no longer need the split file. I can select all the records with TEST anywhere in the name with a SELECT statement: SELECT CUSID from CUST where name like %TEST% and it will return a list of customer numbers (which you can put in an array or data structure to process). There have been samples previously posted, may be sample in IBM's Info Center, or send note offline. There are considerations as to how your files ares indexed. jim ----- Original Message ----- From: "rpg news" <rpgnews@xxxxxxxxxx> To: <MIDRANGE-L@xxxxxxxxxxxx> Sent: Friday, September 10, 2004 8:21 AM Subject: fast search or scan for words in selected field > Hi, > > We currently have customer master file which has customer company name > field.
