I'm not sure if this was answered entirely, but I thought I would add my 2
cents.

About 2 years ago we were in a similar situation, we had invoices with
overlays and a logo going to HP printers with the IPDS (Blue Chip) in them
and it was a "workable" solution.
We have since (somewhat successfully) converted the document and a couple
of others to AFP type documents. I say "somewhat successfully" because I'm
still not satisfied with the converted documents and their appearance now.
They aren't as crisp and clean as the old IPDS but it seems to work a lot
smoother and will print on almost any laser printer.

One of the problems we had with the IPDS chips in the HP printers was in
the networking attachment to the printers from an HP 3000 midrange
computer. It seems that sometimes the printer would not release properly or
in a timely manner and cause print jobs to fail from either the 400 or the
3000.

We used the Blue Kits from a company called MpiTech, but I know there are
several others.

If you do decide to go the AFP route, make sure you test the documents on
your printers that will be used and read the documentation for the gotchas.

Hi all,

We're currently using an IBM Infoprint 1120 to print our invoices. The
invoice have an overlay on them.company logo and such. Every so often, the
Infoprint errors out and we are delayed getting invoices out.

My question is: Can I use a regular old HP 4100 with an IPDS chip (for
example) as a backup printer to the Infoprint. In other words, will ANY
printer with an IPDS chip in it print our invoices, with the overlay?

TIA
