>From a user talking to a software vendor perspective:

On an i5 you would do the following:
Go to the HMC
Management Environment
  HMC01 or whatever
    Server and Partitions
      Server Management
Expand the physical unit
  Expand partitions
    Right click on the partition, NOT the profile
      Select properties
        Look for 'ID:'
By the way, they appear on this list in alphabetical order, not in 
partition id order.

On other machines.

5. Work with system partitions
Number of partitions  . . . . . . . :  3 
Partition manager release . . . . . :  V5R2M0 L0 
 
Partition identifier  . . . . . . . :  1 
Partition name  . . . . . . . . . . :  GDIHQ 
Partition release . . . . . . . . . :  V5R3M0 L000

Mine are numbered 0, 1, 3 so don't assume anything.
