The information is in Unicode. If you use DSPJRN and the 5 on an eitry, then F11 to display hex, you should see a bunch of what look like foreign language accents. These are in ASCII. Between them are x'00' bytes - Unicode characters are 2 bytes long. There are functions to convert, in particular, look up iconv - Scott Klement had something on this in his newsletter fairly recently, IIRC.
