Dear Roger and Ron, I recently received some information from an IBM colleague while researching a remote output queue perfomance problem. I had not previously known that there was and is a significant difference in how the remote output queue and device description methods of supporting LPR printing under OS/400 interact with the Host Print Transform function. Remote Output Queue ------------------- 1. Contact Target Device Asking Permission to Send a File 2. Receive permission to commence send operation from target device 3. Transform Spool File to ASCII 4. Send file If the transform process takes a long time, the connection with the target device will close and the spool file can become hung in *SND status. LPR Device Description ---------------------- 1. Transform Spool File to ASCII 2. Contact Target Device Asking Permission to Send a File 3. Receive permission to commence send operation from target device 4. Send file The LPR device description option can therefore be quite useful for AS/400 and iSeries hosts with limited memory applied to the *SPOOL process. It typically prevents the hang problem caused by a timeout occurring after the receiving device has given permission to begin sending a file.
