CHKTAP will work faster than DSPTAP.  And you can do a RCVMSG for the 
volume id.

You can do this easily in a CL. DSPTAP (with rewind) to an output file and 
then read the output file in and init the tape with the volid in the file. 
Repeat for each tape.

I have inherited a 3572 Magstar tape drive. It will hold 20 tape 
cartridges. I inquired about a program to initialize all 20 tapes for the 
week when they are loadede.  The response I received was, do a DSPTAP, 
wrie doen the VOLID, then do an INZTAP for that VOLID specifying an 
unload. Then repeat the process fo all tapes.

I have been away from CLP programming for a while but there must a way to 
automate this process.

Any help you can provide would be greatly appreciated.
