1) i5 does require V5R3.
2) i5 does require a HMC to do either LPAR or On Demand upgrades.
3) other boxes would use something called a controlling partition

Actually there is something like a controlling partition on an i5 only you
don't allocate resources to it like you do with a controlling partition on
iSeries or AS/400's. The HMC (or HMC's, you can have up to two connected)
talk to this. And, yes, this part of the box has it's own set of PTF's
(though the number of CD's differ from that either for OS/400 or for the
HMC). I forget what they call it.

Subject
LPAR on very small machines

Even though the sales manual says a small 520
can support "more than one" logical partition,
is it really possible to do it on a small machine?

The HMC looks to be a "requirement" in the I5
series, but what would other boxes use instead of
that to control partitions ???

I have a customer that wants to keep a copy of
V4R5 in a partition and run V5R3 as the primary.
Is that even possible ???

Other than the concept, I know little if anything about
LPAR.
