Thanks to everyone for your suggestions. As it turned out, we had already thought of using DSPTAP, but in this case I like CHKTAP better - it's nice and fast, and for this job I really don't care what's on the tape (I know what's on it, and the tape is almost never the problem). I guess it just took me a little while to get my head around the fact that if all I want to do is unload the tape, I need to pretend that I really want to do something else (like display it) . . . .
