You're right, Dan, this is a really cool example of SQL doing what it does best. The fact that you have to sort and/or filter based on joined files makes SQL pretty much the only choice. In fact, I'm tempted to use a variation of this particular problem on the website. In fact, I want to use two variations: one where you DON'T need a workfile and one where you do (that will be determined by the sort/filter requirements).
