The 400 was a merger of the S/36 and the S/38. The 'best' of both worlds, and sometimes the Least Common Denominator. Much of the user friendliness came from the S/36. And the database came from the S/38. The S/36 was definitely a user's machine. The query product was loved by users. From what I hear, the query product on the S/38 was loathed by users. The mentality was also a little different. On the S/36 people were encouraged to use Queries. On the S/38 it people were told that if you wanted user access to data then replace the midrange with a PC network because, by God, you will not get access. And, often, the users did. Some things, it took awhile to catch up. Like the S/36 version of IDDU would allow you to specify only certain values could be in fields and the S/36 version of UPDDTA enforced it. The S/38 had something close in DDS but it was ignored by UPDDTA and only used by reference in screen DDS used by HLL programs. Catch up happened when check constraints came out.
