Adam, turns out you can't check out a directory - error message will be raised - so you won't need the CHKIN. Of course, if the path you give turns out to point to a non-directory object, you will need the CHKIN to release the lock on the object.

According to the help text (F1)

When an object is checked out, other users can read and copy the object. Only the user who has the object checked out can change the object until it is checked in (see the Check In (CHKIN) command).

BTW, I just determined that you cannot check out a QSYS.LIB object - ALCOBJ is what you use there, as always.

Ok, if I CHKOUT a directory, do I need to CHKIN? Also, what is the point of
CHKIN and CHKOUT?

Try the CHKOUT command - if the object you are testing is a directory (you
cannot check out a directory), you will get a CPFA0DA message, so monitor
for that. If it does not exist, you will receive CPFA0A9. If the checkout
was successful, it is not a directory and you need to check it in
immediately.

The command first appeared at V3R1.

I have a CL program that uses CHKDLO to determine the existence of a folder.
We are changing things around to use directories. What would the equivalent
command be to check for the existence of a directory? I assume we can't use
wrklnk, because that will actually display the screen. Also, what would the
correct msgid be?
