ECB = Extended Character Buffer. The ECB holds the display attributes that would normally go into the actual display buffer. The allows for the extended attributes that some devices and workstation controllers support. Most notably, the ability to change the display attribute without wasting a display byte. Unfortunately, this stuff is rarely used because it's not widely supported. Actually, the 3487-ECB emulation means NON-ECB support. Less memory required and hence you get 4 sessions rather than 2.
