What kind of system is the file coming from? Someone mentioned EBCDIC vs. ASCII - if the file is actually EBCDIC (CCSID 37) but has Coded character set 850, it will look like nonsense when you use opt 5 in WRKLNK to se it in IFS. If you have taken opt 5, try F15, then put in a 3 in the top field, then put 37 in the field next to option 3. Press enter. You'll get a message. Ignore it. F12 and see what you see. If it is readable, you have a couple options. The first is to use option 2 against the file, where you can use F15 again to change the CCSID of the file. Or use the CPY command to make a copy and change the CCSID in the process. The second method can be automated, for sure. But maybe the first one can, as well. I've not investigated QShell commands that could change the CCSID - maybe "touch" can do it.
