Automating a FTP

I have a script file that handles ftp'ing a file from our Iseries to a
3rd party.  There is now a request to change the file name when it it
sent.  Currently the file is something like this   RGCCS00H and we
perform a 'Put RGCCS00H RGCCS00H.txt.  Now they would like the file with
the current date in the name something like RGH062104.txt.  
I'm not sure if or how I can automate this in my script.  
Any ideas?
