I would recommend looking at Jabber HTTP://www.jabber.org. To quote the web site: "Jabber is a set of streaming XML protocols and technologies that enable any two entities on the Internet to exchange messages, presence, and other structured information in close to real time. The first Jabber application is an instant messaging (IM) network that offers functionality similar to legacy IM services such as AIM, ICQ, MSN, and Yahoo." In addition you can setup gateways that allow Jabber users to communicate with legacy IM services, including AIM. And there are open source implementations of all of the jabber components, so you could see about porting an existing Jabber client instead of writing one from scratch.
